The genesis of Covenant Clay
I was first captivated by this craft a number of years ago through watching a video of a Korean pottery master throwing on a wheel, looking calm and confident. He did it with excellent control and made it look so easy. I had never done pottery in my life at this point, but I was deeply intrigued. I started self-learning through YouTube and even got myself a throwing wheel. Of course I soon found out it was not as easy as it seemed. I was juggling between a full time job and trying to find as much time as possible to practise, and it felt like I never got anywhere. After a while, because of life circumstances, I had to give away my throwing wheel temporarily. But I never quite gave up. I started doing evening classes in London and joined a shared studio (Turning Earth). Through the support of my wife, I also managed to connect with experienced potters both in America and in the UK and learnt a great deal from them.
One day, the words of the Bible in the Book of Genesis, chapter 15, came to me. They were about the blessings and promises that God spoke to Abraham - I felt as if God was speaking those same words to me. I was in a place where I thought I would never be able to do pottery full time, even though I very much would love to. I wanted pottery to be my profession, my craft, not just a hobby. I had felt disheartened, but the Word of God gave me courage and peace to keep going. That's why my brand name is Covenant Clay. It is a reminder to me that God's faithfulness and grace always outweigh my doubts and uncertainties. Covenant Clay was born in London in 2020 with a small production between home and a shared studio. At the end of 2020, we moved to Norfolk. We have been blessed with our own garage studio, where all the production is based right now. My inspiration often comes from practical needs in daily life. The artist paint palettes, clocks, soap dishes, toothbrush holders, oven dishes etc. are all items that we need around our house! I enjoy solving problems with timeless design combined with thoughtful functionality. I love punctuating our ordinary lives with beauty and purpose through the gift of clay. And it is my privilege to share this gift with you. |
